The museum is currently undergoing extensive alterations due to the Enlargement and Reform Project. Consequently, the administrative facilities, workshops, library, etc. are located in provisional areas. The building that is being extended, attached to the Palacio, is under construction. An area covering over 4,000 m2 will house services offered to the public, a temporary exhibition hall, a conference room permanent exhibition halls, workshops, a restoration laboratory, storage area, offices, a vast library and archive, and part of the archaeological site.
Once it is finished and open to the public, the following phase will begin: improving the museographic capacity of the Palacio with a new permanent exhibition installation, as well as linking and acknowledging all of the areas where the archaeological site is being conserved.
Library Specialising in archaeology, museology and historical heritage, it has 13,500 registered volumes of books and periodicals, although access to them is currently restricted due to limited space, as mentioned earlier. Archives The institution has its own historical archive where part of its prolific history is gathered together. The array of old photographs of the museum itself are outstanding. In addition, the personal archive of the architect and researcher, Félix Hernández Jiménez, a key figure involved in Andalusian sites and monuments around the middle of the 20th century, is conserved in the museum.
