Conservation and restoration of ceramic pieces from Madinat al-Zahra with EU funding
Thanks to funding from the European Regional Development Fund the Archaeological Ensemble of Madinat al-Zahra has launched a series of conservation and restoration works on ceramic pieces belonging to its archaeological collection.
The project envisaged the restoration of 18 ceramic pieces from different sectors of the archaeological site at Madinat al-Zahra.
Intervention was carried out on pieces of different types and techniques: domestic pottery and glazed ceramic pieces are featured, some of which are decorated with the green manganese technique used in items with a marked official character. The pieces are from different areas in the Alcázar de Madinat al-Zahra and their varying conditions required them to undergo restoration both to halt the process of decay and also to recover their merits, which were adversely affected by fragmentation.
The ultimate purpose of this project is to increase the collection of ceramic material that might become part of a future reorganisation in the museum's permanent exhibition area.
Thanks to cofunding by the EU, through the ERDF, a specialist company has undertaken the work required to recover and preserve the historic value of the pieces and their completeness.
